EU and coal

The coal (hard coal and lignite) belongs to abundant energy resources on the territory of the European Union. The coal presently accounts for around one-third of the EU’s electricity production. For example in the Czech Republic the coal accounts for  approximatelly 62 % of the country’s electricity production. The Czech Republic is also one of the EU member countries where the coal-mining is profitable. In some countries the coal-mining is granted by governments or phased out.

The EU is aware of the strategic importance of the coal as a sustainable, competitive and accesible energy resource. Therefore the EU calls for investments in research of Clean Coal Technologies, Carbon Capture and Storage Technologies and in improvement of efficiency of coal power stations.

At the moment, several EU institutions deal with coal (and energy issues generally), including the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU. The European Commission also initiated the establishment of the Berlin Forum to provide a platform for dialogue between the Commission and stakeholders from the energy sector.
