Miners' safety comes first and foremost
Focus on modernization of mining technology and on personal protection aids by OKD management
The eight billion Czech korunas invested over a period of two years into the most advanced coal-getting and driving technologies under the POP 2010 program are to be topped off by yet another half a billion worth of new personal protection aids purchased to enhance the safety of miners at work. This has been the decision of OKD Corporation, attesting to its forefront ranking among the major, well-managed, and prosperous European mining companies aspiring to a bright future.
Upgrades of personal protection aids are a component part of the mining safety enhancement program launched by the Corporation early this year. The fact is that the present-day miners' equipment is fully operational, but the new aids including working clothes make use of the latest technologies and also are more comfortable and more easily controlled.
For example, the new „fashion series“ of clothing for miners at work will be composed of green-color cotton T-shirts provided with a large-sized reflection strip and an OKD logo, plus new, snug trousers with reflective tabs. This set will be completed by comfortable and resistant boots made of Goretex, more powerful and, at the same time, more compact lamps, and also modern self-rescue devices.
Due to the safety reasons the color differenciation of helmets was implemented. The colors represent different work position.

OKD have also been setting aside further funding for air-conditioning installations, for highly effective dust separation and removal systems, and also for staff training. The main point of all these measures is to forge ahead for greater safety at work and for improved working conditions at the mines.
